Iraq, 1990. Nine-year-old Lamia is chosen to provide the cake for her class’s compulsory celebration of Saddam Hussein’s mandatory birthday celebration, an honour she and her ailing grandmother Bibi can scarcely afford. She must use her wits to find ways to procure the necessary ingredients in a place where they’re in desperately short supply, and avoid serious consequences for failing. Winner of multiple awards, including the Cannes Caméra d’Or, this moving and tender drama unfolds like a modern fable, seen through the innocent eyes of its young heroine.
