Flathead is the haunting black and white docufiction of Cass Cumberford, a man in his 70s who has dealt with illness, loss and addiction that ventures to his childhood home of the regional Queensland town Bundaberg. In order to heal and search for life’s deeper meaning he explores the religious beliefs of the townsfolk and becomes friends with the local fish and chip shop owner, Andrew Wong, who is in the midst of processing the loss of his late father through Buddhism. With momentary flashes of colour, Flathead manages to paint a bittersweet visual of isolating masculine struggle and the difficult quest for personal redemption.
