BIFF 2025 Launch Gala

Unfolding beneath the Story Bridge at Howard Smith Wharves, Queensland’s premier film festival announces its global ambitions. As the sun dips behind the skyline, the riverside transforms into a stage of its own; red carpet arrivals, live music, flowing cocktails, and a crowd that’s as electric as the view.  It’s our first curtain-raiser, and the start of something extraordinary.

Director Giulio Bertelli joins audiences in Brisbane to present his FIPRESCI-award winning film, followed by a powerful conversation with Australia’s leading female Olympians on ambition, resilience, and the pursuit of greatness.

As BIFF relaunches its global ambitions and Brisbane prepares for its moment on the world stage, this formal reception marks an important occasion in the city’s bold new cultural chapter. Brisbane, this is your moment; dress up, raise a glass, and step into the story!

This debut feature from Giulio Bertelli tracks three female athletes as they train for and compete in the fictional Ludoj 2024 Olympic Games in rifle shooting, fencing and judo. As these women traverse their intensely crippling solitary training in a never ending selection of sterile environments, we get a glimpse of just how little time they actually spend in the thrills and glory of competition. Bertelli blends documentary and avant-garde elements to craft a bold visual language that questions the spectacle of modern competition.
Agon premiered at the 2025 Venice Film Festival where it won the Venice Critics’ Week FIPRESCI Award and the Best Production Award.
