Marine biologist Dr. Edie Widder has spent her life exploring the ocean’s depths, uncovering the glowing secrets of bioluminescence — sea creatures that create their own light. In the 1980s, she descended into the ocean’s twilight zone and saw this phenomenon firsthand. At the time, women in oceanography were few, and sexism was rife; some crews even believed women brought bad luck at sea. Filmmaker Tasha Van Zandt follows Widder on a new expedition with OceanX to capture bioluminescence like never before, blending her groundbreaking present with her hard-won past. The film celebrates persistence in the face of prejudice and reminds us that science, like the sea itself, demands courage, curiosity, and a little bit of light.The screening will be followed by a Q&A with the director.
